PRIDE Democrats ("PRIDE") is a New York City-wide political club.  The "PRIDE" name is an acronym for Pride Rainbow Independent Democrats Etcetera.  PRIDE Dems is primarily -- but definitely not exclusively -- a Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender ("GLBT") political organization.  PRIDE Dems has the longest-reaching Gay historical roots of any Gay political club in New York.  It commenced and incrementalized as the political arm of the STONEWALL Veterans' Association ("S.V.A.").  It took a quarter-of-a-century for this political group to get its own name and identity but when it did, on the occasion of the international "Stonewall 25", it got the best and the most appropriate moniker:  PRIDE!

PRIDE Democrats sponsored the largest candidates' forum -- literally a political "who's who" -- in the history of the State of New York.  Among those cabdidates who attended and spoke were Geraldine Ferraro, Mark Green, Betsy McCaughey, Peter Vallone, Sr., Charles Hynes, James Larocca, Sandra Frankel, Eliot Spitzer, Oliver Koppell, Catherine Abate, Evan Davis, Edolphus Towns, Ken Diamondstone, Eric Schneiderman, Danny O'Donnell, Jerry Goldfedder, Carlos Manzano, Aubrey Lees, Christopher Lynn, Christine Quinn, et al.  The forum was held at the Gay & Lesbian Community Services Center on West 13th Street in Greenwich Village, Manhattan, on Thursday evening, August 27, 1998.  It started right on time at 7 p.m. and lasted right up to 11 p.m. for four 'all-seats-taken/standing-room-only' hours.  Williamson had the big Assembly Hall decorated with red, white, blue and pink balloons.  In another break from the usual, he allowed the candidates to post their campaign posters on the walls.  Prior to the event, we were repeatedly told by most all:  "Don't have a political forum in late, hot, summer August; no one will come.  Besides, so many people are on vacation then".  Williamson Henderson announced that when he throws an event, people will come even if there's a "heat wave".  There was!  The Gay Center's barely acceptable air-conditioning system then (years before the renovation) would be severely tested that very hot evening.  It failed -- and totally broke down.  Hot, hot, hot.

Nonetheless, the forum event was so important, strategically timed in close proximity to the Primary Election, and so well-promoted and advertised that it was incredibly an overwhelming and unique success.  It seemed that almost everyone was surprised -- except Williamson.  He was the director, the manager and the chief moderator of the entire Democratic candidates forum.  He also chose sectional co-moderators namely Liz Abzug (LJACS), Matt Foreman (ESPA), Kevin McGruder (GMAD) and Noah Pfefferblit (MBP Office) to help out with the big forum.  Media advertising was handled exclusively by the New York Blade News under the project promotional direction of Williamson.

PRIDE Democrats, unlike its counterparts, does not entertain 'conventional wisdom' or simply choose 'safe' candidates.  With determined, daring and dashing political strategies, maneuvers and approaches, PRIDE is known for promoting a "dark horse" that places first or getting behind a losing underdog and turning them into a thoroughbred winner!  PRIDE has many prominent non-GLBT members such as U.S. Congressmember Carolyn B. Maloney, New York State Governor Eliot L. Spitzer, New York State Attorney General Andrew M. Cuomo, former Democratic Vice-Presidential candidate and U.S. Congressmember Geraldine A. Ferraro, former New York City Council Speaker Peter A. Vallone, Sr., former N.Y.S. Lieutenant Governor Betsy H. McCaughey, Honorable Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., N.Y.S. Senator Eric Schneiderman and the late and great N.Y.C. Councilmember James E. "Jed" Davis.

To quote PRIDE founder Williamson Henderson, "Unlike any other Gay (or non-Gay) political club, if expedient or necessary, we will go anywhere -- uptown, crosstown and/or downtown, East Side/West Side -- to hand out our PRIDE endorsement literature as long as it is to registered-to-vote citizens.  In general elections, we distribute the lit to everyone!  You won't be surprised to know, if you know New York City and the GLBT communities, that in our political communications and travels, we have come across the paths of a few Democrat rats.  Who hasn't?  Undeterred and more motivated, PRIDE Dems pushes on and up the ladder -- and typically prevails."
